Ms. Amanda Misner
I graduated from the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana with my Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with endorsements to teach Physical Education grades K-12 and I am currently working on my Master’s Degree in Teacher Leadership Specialization. I began my teaching career within the Los Angeles Unified School District as a Physical Education teacher at Robert Peary Middle School in Gardena, CA. While teaching in Los Angeles, I started a middle school girl’s basketball program within the district and later went on to coach high school girl’s basketball at Carson High School in Carson, CA. Prior to my husband deploying with the United States Marine Corps, I relocated to Oceanside, CA where I began teaching Physical Education grades 6-10 at Guajome Park Academy in Vista, CA. While raising my family, I earned my certification as a personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and spent many years in Oahu, Hawaii as a personal trainer. My next teaching opportunity was with the Champaign Unit 4 School District at Jefferson Middle School in Champaign, IL. At Jefferson, I was the P.E. department chair, girl’s basketball program director and head coach, a member of the Standards Based Grading planning committee, and an active novice teacher mentor. I also served the students of Jefferson as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) building sponsor. My last assignment was at Traders Point Christian Schools, where I served as the 5-8th grade Athletic Director and 5-9th grade Physical Education/Health teacher.
This is my tenth year teaching Physical Education at the Middle/Junior High Level. In my Physical Education classes, I differentiate instruction for all students on a daily basis by providing choices to the students that will make them successful at any level. I incorporate team sports, individual sports, and mainstream fitness in my classes in order to provide the students realistic avenues to stay healthy at any age in their development. Technology is a big part of our lives and I believe it should be integrated into every class to include Physical Education. I have included effective fitness apps, such as Sworkit, into my curriculum to give the students realistic options for staying fit outside of P.E. class and into their adulthood. Assessment drives instruction and assessment is also a huge part in my curriculum development. I culminate each unit with a written or physical assessment in order to adjust my unit lessons according to the needs of students as it pertains to skill development and retention of knowledge of the sport/activity.
My desire to teach and coach to the ENTIRE student, foster healthy relationships with students, parents, teachers, administration combined with my enthusiasm for my craft has led me to Progeny Academy. I look forward to serving the school in this capacity and am hopeful to accomplish great things at this institution.
